The Flora of Seattle in 1850: The Landscape Before Urban Development
with Ray Larson
Ray Larson, Gardener Lead at the Residence of the UW President, will discuss his masters thesis, which was the first comprehensive attempt to research and describe the major plant species and ecosystems that existed in Seattle before it was settled by Euro-Americans. His lecture will help you choose plants to grow today that may have once been here, or those that are especially garden worthy and underutilized, and some that more gardeners should try since they once thrived locally.

THE ORNAMENTAL PLANT: FROM THIRD CENTURY ATHENS TO YOUR GARDEN
(SPRING SYMPOSIUM)
The NHS symposium co-sponsored by the Pendleton and Elisabeth Carey Miller Charitable Foundation and the Elisabeth Carey Miller Botanical Garden will follow the plants we find in our gardens from history to modern day collecting in the wild through propagation and finally to the retail nursery where the gardener purchases the plant. The featured speakers at the symposium will be Anna Pavord, "The Naming of Names": A two-thousand-year search for the rules of nature’s game; Dan Hinkley, "Where to Collect, What to Collect, How to Collect, Should I Collect": The ins and outs, ups and downs of introducing new plants into cultivation; Kelly Dodson, "Yin and Yang of Plant Hunting in China and India": a sober and pedantic look at the drudgery of plant hunting; and Richie Steffen, "From Kashmir to Kmart": The tale of how the collected plants finally appear on the shelves of even the "big box" retailers.
