2007 NHS SCHOLARSHIPS OFFERED

ELISABETH CAREY MILLER
SCHOLARSHIP IN HORTICULTURE

 STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

The purpose of the scholarship is to support the research and education of a student enrolled in the graduate program at the Center for Urban Horticulture at the University of Washington, or in the University programs directly associated with the Center, such as the College of Forestry Resources or the Department of Landscape Architecture.

GUIDELINES

The intent is to support the efforts of a student with an environmental horticultural goal.  The source of funds is from the interest accrued on the Northwest Horticultural Society Horticultural Education Fund, a $150,000 endowment.

The scholarship is not intended as a full scholarship but as financial assistance for a specific project.  The student’s course of study is to concentrate on enhancing their knowledge of the unique environmental conditions and cultural requirements faced by plants growing in an urban environment and/or special related projects.

The scholarships are granted for one year only and are for no more than $2,500 each, and may be given to one or more students each year.

PROCEDURES

Each applicant must submit the following by October 5, 2007:

·         A one page narrative describing his/her course of study

·         A resume of his/her work experience

·         A completed official transcript of his/her academic record

·         Two letters of recommendation, one of which must be written by a faculty member

NOTE:  Students may reapply if previously denied a scholarship.

Students previously awarded scholarships may reapply in non-consecutive years.

Notification of scholarship awards will be given applicants by October 26, 2007 and presented at the annual meeting of the Society on November 14, 2007.

At the end of the award year both a written and an oral report must be presented to the Society.  The reports are usually given at the annual meeting of the Society in November.
