Steve Lorton, the former Northwest editor and bureau chief of Sunset magazine, will share memories from his 33-year odyssey into gardens around the world, including those of an Eskimo on the Siberian Coast of the Bering Sea, Prince Charles, Queen Elizabeth, and many others. Steve is known for his engaging storytelling skills, so this should be an entertaining evening for all.

Mediterranean Garden Style in the Pacific Northwest:
Theory, Aesthetics, and Plant Palette, with Tom Fischer

Tom Fischer, editor-in-chief of Timber Press and former editor of Horticulture magazine, will discuss Mediterranean gardening in the Northwest. When he moved to Portland in 2004 and became acquainted with the dry summers and wet winters he developed a Mediterranean garden in his front yard. Tom will examine the origins and characteristics of "classic" Mediterranean gardening and explore how that style can best be adapted to a similar, but slightly cooler and wetter climate.

Propagation with Riz Reyes (CLASS)

Join avid plantsman Riz Reyes at the Dunn Garden to learn how to propagate your favorite perennial plants. Enjoy a guided tour of the curator's garden led by Glenn Withey and Charles Price. Take note of plants that catch your eye and then join Riz for a fun and easy lesson on plant morphology to learn how those plants grow and reproduce. Riz will show you how to root cuttings, divide an overgrown clump, start seeds, and understand how plants are mass produced through tissue culture (TC). Attendees will be permitted to tour the Olmstead-designed Dunn Gardens at the conclusion of the class. Beginning gardeners are encouraged to attend.
