Elisabeth Carey Miller Scholarship in Horticulture

The purpose of the scholarship is to support the research and education of a student enrolled in the graduate program at the Center for Urban Horticulture at the University of Washingotn, or in the University programs directly associated with the Center, such as the College of Forest Resources or the Department of Landscape Architecture.

Guidelines

The intent is to support the efforts of a student with a project or goal related to environmental horticulture. The source of the funds is from the interest accrued from the NHS Horticultural Education Fund, a $150,000 endowment. The scholarship is not intended as a full scholarship but as financial assistance for a specific project. The student's project should focus in some way on the distinctive environmental conditions and cultural requirements faced by plants growing in urban environments. For example, the project might apply to understanding how plants respond to conditions found in urbanizing environments, or how they cope with stress or environmental degradation. Alternately, the project might relate to the ways in which plants are used in, or contribute to, urban and urbanizing environments.

The scholarships are granted for one year only. In 2008 there will be one scholarship for $4,000, with the possibility of an additional scholarship of $1,000 being awarded to another student. Each applicant must submit the following by June 16, 2008:

• A one-page narrative describing the student's course of study. This narrative must describe how the project relates in some way to applied environmental horticulture, e.g.: plant stress physiology, propagation/growth, application to public horticulture programs, etc.
• A resume of work experience and area of academic study.
• A complete official transcript of the student's academic record.
• Two letters of recommendation, one of which must be written by a UW faculty member.

Students may reapply if previously denied a scholarship. Students previously awarded scholarships may reapply in non-consecutive years. At the end of the award year, both a written and oral report must be presented to the Society. The reports are usually given at the annual meeting of the Society in November.
